If it is your first time in Rome, it can be hard to decide what to do on a limited schedule. Here is a sample itinerary with some of the must-do items to help prioritize your time there.

Day 1: Arrival and Ancient Rome

Morning:

Arriving in Rome is like stepping into a time machine, where ancient ruins and modern life seamlessly coexist. Start your journey with a bucketlist item – visiting the iconic Colosseum. Booking tickets in advance is a smart move to avoid long lines and dive straight into the history of this majestic amphitheater. Now that you’ve worked up an appetite, head over to Trastevere. This charming neighborhood boasts narrow cobblestone streets lined with quaint restaurants. Try a classic dish like Cacio e Pepe or Carbonara at a local trattoria.

Afternoon/Evening:

Stroll over to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, where you’ll walk in the footsteps of emperors and senators. Engage with the history that shaped Rome’s identity while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the city. For a luxurious dining experience, book a table at Aroma Restaurant overlooking the Colosseum. Indulge in exquisite Italian dishes while savoring the mesmerizing view.

Day 2: Vatican City

Morning:

Get an early start to beat the crowds at the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Admire the stunning artworks by Michelangelo, Raphael, and other masters. Don’t miss St. Peter’s Basilica, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Try some street food near the Vatican, like supplì (fried rice balls) or pizza al taglio (Roman-style pizza sold by the slice) from local vendors.

Afternoon:

Take a leisurely stroll along the Tiber River or explore the charming streets of the Campo de’ Fiori neighborhood. Visit the Pantheon, a marvel of ancient engineering and one of the best-preserved buildings from antiquity. For a delightful dining experience, try out Piazza Navona. There are plenty of restaurants offering alfresco dining where you can enjoy Italian cuisine while taking in the lively atmosphere of the square.

Day 3: Baroque Rome and Local Neighborhoods

Morning:

Begin your day by visiting the iconic Spanish Steps and the stunning Trevi Fountain. Don’t forget to toss a coin into the fountain to ensure your return to Rome! Opt for a relaxed meal at a local trattoria near Piazza di Spagna. Enjoy some pasta dishes accompanied by a refreshing glass of local wine.

Afternoon:

Explore the neighborhoods of Rome, like the equally charming neighborhoods of Monti or Testaccio. Wander through their streets, discover hidden churches, and mingle with the locals.

Day 4: Leisure and Departure

Morning:

Take a leisurely morning to relax or revisit your favorite spots. Maybe grab a cappuccino and cornetto at a local café and watch the city wake up. Get any last minute shopping in before your return home.

Extending your stay? Consider exploring Florence, with its Renaissance art and plentiful vineyards, or Naples for its rich history and proximity to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.
