Lisbon has increased in popularity amongst tourists in recent years, due to its affordable flights, great food, and abundant history. You could easily spend a week enjoying local food and wine and walking the streets (and definitely make time to do that!). Below is a sample 4-day itinerary for the Lisbon region with a few options for suggested day trips. In addition to these, if you have additional time, I would suggest a tour of Douro Valley to visit wineries landscapes and enjoy an afternoon cruising down the river.

Morning: Begin your Lisbon adventure by diving into its rich history at the iconic São Jorge Castle. Take in panoramic views of the city and immerse yourself in centuries of Portuguese heritage.
Lunch: Head to Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest district, for a taste of traditional Portuguese cuisine. Savor bacalhau (salted cod) or grilled sardines while soaking in the neighborhood’s charming ambiance. If you have time for a food tour, I recommend the Oh My Cod tour. Come hungry.

Dinner: Indulge in contemporary Portuguese cuisine at Belcanto, a Michelin-starred restaurant where Chef José Avillez reimagines traditional dishes with innovative flair.
Day 2: Museums, Shopping, and River Cruising
Morning: Immerse yourself in art and culture at the National Tile Museum, showcasing Portugal’s exquisite azulejos (hand-painted tiles) that narrate the country’s history.

Afternoon: Visit the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology) to explore innovative exhibitions and contemporary art installations.

Day 4: Day Trip to Sintra

Day Trips Beyond Lisbon
If you have more than 4 days, I highly recommend the following day trips. If you have even longer, I’d recommend spending a few days in southern Portugal for some stellar hikes and beach days.
Day Trip to Cascais:* Explore the charming coastal town of Cascais, known for its beautiful beaches, historic center, and the Boca do Inferno cliff formation.
Visit to Évora:* Journey to Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to discover its well-preserved Roman temple, medieval walls, and the hauntingly beautiful Chapel of Bones.
Excursion to Óbidos:* Experience the enchanting medieval village of Óbidos, enclosed by ancient walls and filled with narrow streets, historic churches, and quaint shops.
Whether you stick to the city’s vibrant streets or venture out to neighboring towns, Portugal’s beauty will surely leave an indelible mark on your travel memories.
